Swaraj Tractors, Mahindra Susten Commission 42 MWp Solar Project in Punjab

Swaraj Tractors and Mahindra Susten have commissioned a 42 MWp group captive solar power project in Bathinda, Punjab. Marking a significant step in Swaraj’s transition towards renewable energy and sustainable manufacturing. The solar project is expected to meet around 50% of the electricity requirements of Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing facilities in Punjab. At the time of commissioning, it was among the largest group captive solar installations in the state. Developed and commissioned by Mahindra Susten, the project will supply renewable power to Swaraj Tractors’ manufacturing, assembly and foundry operations in Mohali, Punjab. The solar facility is located at Village Teona Pujarian in Talwandi Sabo, Bathinda, and spans approximately 141 acres. Also read the Mahindra Tractor Sales August 2026 blog at Krishi Vikas.com.

42 MWp Solar Plant to Generate 61.54 Million Units Annually

The Bathinda solar facility uses N-Type TOPCon bifacial solar modules mounted on fixed-tilt structures. The technology is designed to improve energy generation while making efficient use of the available land. The project is expected to generate approximately 61.54 million units of renewable electricity annually. This will offset more than 42,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions every year. More than 97% of the project components have been sourced from India. Supporting domestic renewable-energy manufacturing and strengthening the local supply chain. The remaining capacity is proposed to support the renewable electricity requirements of other Mahindra Group companies operating in Punjab.

Swaraj Targets Higher Renewable Energy Usage

Commenting on the project, Gaganjot Singh, Chief Executive Officer, Swaraj Division, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., said the company is focusing on two key areas in its clean-energy strategy: reducing energy consumption and replacing conventional energy sources with renewable energy. Swaraj has already made progress on energy efficiency. In 2023, all its tractor manufacturing plants achieved EP100 certification, aimed at improving energy productivity. The company has now combined these energy-efficiency initiatives with greater renewable-energy adoption, with renewable sources expected to account for more than half of its energy requirements. The Bathinda project also supports the Mahindra Group’s broader ambition of becoming Planet Positive.

Solar Project to Save 1.92 Million Litres of Water

Beyond renewable power generation, the project incorporates measures to reduce its environmental footprint. Semi-automated robotic cleaning systems will be used to clean the solar modules, helping save an estimated 1.92 million litres of water every year compared with more water-intensive cleaning methods. Environmental and social impact assessments, along with a climate-change assessment, were conducted during the project’s development. Measures have also been incorporated for waste management, vehicle movement and minimising disturbance to the surrounding ecosystem.

Mahindra Susten Expands Into Group Captive Power Supply

For Mahindra Susten, the Bathinda project represents a new business milestone. According to Avinash Rao, Managing Director and CEO, Mahindra Susten, the project is the company’s first renewable-energy project supplying power to commercial and industrial customers through a group captive structure. Mahindra Susten is the renewable-energy platform of the Mahindra Group. It currently has 2.1 GWp of executed IPP capacity and a 3 GWp development pipeline, with operations spanning solar, hybrid renewable energy. Energy-storage solutions, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS). The company also has around 15 years of EPC experience and has delivered 4.8 GWp of renewable-energy projects globally before shifting towards an IPP-focused model.

Swaraj Strengthens Its Sustainability Focus

The solar project forms part of Swaraj Tractors’ wider sustainability strategy. It covers renewable energy, energy efficiency, water conservation and waste reduction. All Swaraj manufacturing plants are water positive and certified as Zero Waste to Landfill facilities. Its foundry was also the first foundry operation in India to receive Zero Waste to Landfill certification. The company is also working to reduce product-related Scope 3 emissions, increase supplier decarbonisation, strengthen ESG capabilities and expand green dealership initiatives. In February 2026, Swaraj received the Golden Peacock Award for CSR Excellence for initiatives supporting rural communities and inclusive growth.

Krishi Vikas Industry Take

The 42 MWp Bathinda solar project highlights a broader shift in India’s tractor manufacturing sector. From conventional energy consumption towards renewable-powered production. For agricultural machinery companies, sustainability is increasingly moving beyond product efficiency to include factory operations, supply chains, water management and emissions reduction. For Swaraj, sourcing renewable electricity for around half of its Punjab manufacturing requirements could help reduce operational emissions while improving the sustainability profile of its manufacturing ecosystem. The project also demonstrates how group captive renewable-energy models can become a practical route for large industrial companies to accelerate clean-energy adoption.
